Portals
First of all, what are portals?
Portals are what connects virtual worlds in the Metaverse, similar to what links do in connecting websites in the Web. Similar to how links allow users to navigate from website A to website B, portals empower users to teleport from virtual world A to virtual world B in the Metaverse.
Links are insufficient to support user teleportation in the Metaverse, because their technical design goal was mainly to provide a destination for the user (e.g. www.yoursite.com). In an immersive environment like the Metaverse where users can virtually walk into portals, we need portals to not only provide a destination, but also self-describe what they look like (e.g. a giant purple vortex with lightning emanating from it, or an Alice-in-Wonderland type of rabbit role).
Why do we need an open portal standard?
If we enable users to seamlessly teleport from world A to world B and back, we will need A and B to agree on a standardized format for portals. Ideally, it would be not just A and B to agree on such a format, but the majority of metaverse developers too.
We need a universal and common format to describe portals, and that format needs to be openly available and welcoming for anyone to participate in its iterations and improvement. The MHTTP Open Portal Schema is our attempt at that aspiration - it is meant to be community-driven, with reference implementations that are fully open source.
With MHTTP, our mission is to contribute towards building an open and interoperable Metaverse, consisting of a truly decentralized coalition of virtual worlds beginning today and venturing into tomorrow.
Why create portals?
Today, you can already create a portal to:
- Connect to a rapidly growing ecosystem of Metaverse users and consumers
- Drive user traffic to your virtual world, website, app, game or social media profile
- Collaborate with other creators and brands interested in the Metaverse
- Experiment and have fun with MHTTP, the world’s 1st metaverse teleportation protocol
